Food of San Francisco

Its only fitting to start off depicting our San Francisco trip with food...

With some 3,489 places to eat, more per capita than any other major city in the United States, it’s no wonder that after scenery the second most popular reason for visiting this 47-square-mile culinary crossroads is “restaurants.” (source)

No shortage of food for sure. There wasn't enough time in the day to hit all the places we wanted (just an excuse to go back) but we made a pretty good dent in our list!

Cupcake Fever!

After sadly missing a cupcakes & champagne party in February I'll finally be able to make some stellar cupcakes for another friend's cupcake party this weekend...

But the BIG question is... what cupcakes to bring??

I've decided I want to bring both a sweet and savory cupcake... I've basically settled on the savory cupcake - a vanilla-maple-bacon cupcake. The sweet is up in the air... do I go classic with vanilla cupcakes from Magnolia, out on a limb with champagne cupcakes with blackberry filling and mascarpone cream from Darjeeling Dreams or go with my stand-by favorite cupcakes from Giada - mascarpone cupcakes with strawberry glaze?

I'll post recipes and pics next week! Whatever I choose... I'm sure I'll happily eat them all :)

Thanksgiving Prep

Sorry I've been a little M.I.A. with my posting. We're in the middle of a big, unorganized, part-painted, part-primed house so my kitchen isn't completely available to me for cooking new things! I'm only making stand-by recipes and getting yummy things out of the freezer I made in advance of the wedding/honeymoon/move (chicken and sausage gumbo, chili, and red beans).

In light of not having new recipes of my own work for anyone to check out - I've put together a list of yummy things I've been seeing online about Thanksgiving! (which is only 20 days away)

Appetizer - Stuffed Mushrooms from Giada de Laurentiis
Turkey - Simple Roast Turkey from Epicurious
Dressing - Cornbread Dressing with Sausage and Apples from The Pioneer Woman
Side - Roasted New Potatoes with Red Onion, Garlic and Pancetta from Epicurious
Side - Green Bean Casserole from Alton Brown
Bread - Cloverleaf Rolls from Epicurious
Dessert - Pecan Squares from Barefoot Contessa

I am hosting Thanksgiving again... but this time at our house! We're doing something nontraditional but will be delish all the same. I'll post the menu, recipes and pics after Thanksgiving.

Peak-Season: Spring

I love this map from Epicurious: Peak-Season Map. You can search by month and by state to easily find out what food is in season!

For example: April in Texas gives you this list:
  • blackberries
  • cauliflower
  • celery
  • cucumbers
  • grapefruit
  • oranges
  • peaches
  • spinach
  • strawberries
  • turnips

And, in honor of Laura A, here's a list of ideas based on the peak-season list:

peach and blackberry shortcakes

cauliflower with serrano ham and tomato

celery stuffed with smoked gouda and sun-dried tomatoes

my mom's tomato and cucumber salad:

(sliced tomato, peeled & sliced cucumber, splash of vinegar, salt & pepper)

pink grapefruit and champagne sorbet

mixed green salad with oranges, cranberries and pecans

spinach and mushrooms with truffle oil

strawberry butter

roasted turnips

Happy cooking!
