Shoyu Chicken

This week we're having a very Hawaiian dish - Shoyu Chicken. Mike had it often in Hawaii and we saw it mentioned on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives this week while Guy visited a plate lunch place in Hawaii. Mike helped cook too... which was nice since I was also trying to make quesadillas and salsa to have in the fridge this week :)

The recipe is from Aida Mollenkamp and is super simple - basically everything goes into one pot and then is served with rice. Its salty from the soy sauce, sweet from the brown sugar and slightly spicy from the ginger. We made half a recipe since its just the two of us.

  1. Looks/sounds so yummy! I will be trying this recipes next week. Can I get away with using ginger powder instead of an actual piece of ginger?

  2. Hm... not sure actually, you would need to find a conversion for fresh to powder (maybe something like this: http://www.ochef.com/774.htm). Not sure if that would change the taste of the dish since the ginger is eventually removed from the sauce. However, ginger is really easy to find in grocery stores now and you can easily peel it using the back of a spoon. Its usually kept by the root vegetables in a basket at the Kroger I go to.
